Getting into mobile strategy without the overwhelm
Strategy games have a reputation for being intimidating on phones, and honestly, sometimes they earn it. Tide Command threw a wall of systems at me in the first twenty minutes and I nearly quit. Then it clicked, and it became one of my favorite things on my phone.
The key is to accept that you'll lose your first campaign, and that's fine. My first fleet ran out of supplies far from port and got picked apart. That loss taught me more than any tutorial screen did.
Pausable real-time is your friend. If a game offers it, use it constantly at the start. Stop, look at the whole board, plan, then unpause. Nobody's timing you, and the AI won't punish patience.
Once the systems become second nature, the real fun begins — reading the map, using weather or terrain against your opponent, setting a trap two turns ahead. That payoff is worth pushing through a rough first hour.
